We got to our show in Cedar Falls, Iowa and lo-and-behold, it was cancelled and nobody told us. Our plan was to bar hop and wallow in self pity but we were saved by the girls who own the art space we were supposed to be play in. Tasha and her crew cooked us a huge meal (pasta, the closest we got to Italian food this whole tour easily), really helping us out, and let us crash there.

The next day we played a house show, in Louisville, KY. Everyone was super nice even if one of the dudes kept incorrectly making fun of us for naming our band after a Wonder Years song (why does no one listen to The Get Up Kids?) We had some drunken sing-alongs and, after me not showering for over a week, got welcomed to a freezing cold shower.

After, we played with Landmines at Mac’s Bar in Lansing, MI – the bathroom won the award for most gross that I had to shit in on tour. Pat and I were also a little upset the bar was playing Mallrats instead of the Home Run Derby. The show was good but ended kinda early so we awkwardly drove the measly hour to the next day’s show.

…Which was Rack n Roll in Riverview, Michigan, a favorite venue of WSP. It has a boxing ring for Foxy Boxing but, after getting an oil change and having nothing to do all day, we ended up drinking in the parking lot and forgot to give each other poorly executed wrestling moves for the first time when the bar opened. Dexter and Max smartly (and deliciously) drank Faygo and vodka because we were by Detroit. The show was great, we played with Snafu (who covered the oft-forgotten classic by NOFX “Shower Days”) and Slaves To The Pavement. We stayed with the Slaves To The Pavement dudes and had a super great time.

The day started with Pat accidentally drinking out of the water bottle I’ve been hocking green mucus in for the past week. We played Stockton, CA at the Plea For Peace Center. The show was very good but mostly uneventful, so I read the Don’t Be A Dick zine Max got at the San Francisco Anarchist Book Collective - an excellent anti-rape zine, very informative. We left our cymbals there however and had to go back and get them… we quickly realized we lose a lot of shit thanks to medical marijuana including but not limited to toothpaste, ipods, pedals and our hi-hat stand.

The next day we played Studio 21 in Rocklin, CA. We heard it was a Christian venue and the kids putting it on/band that played before us were Christian so we decided to pretend to be a Christian band which climaxed during Max’s rant at the end of our set about how much Jesus has got him through all his life’s hardships. However no one really clapped or anything and we realized that not a lot of people there were really actually Christian, fail.

We got to Reno super early the next day so we decided to go to Harrah’s Casino. It was the 3rd of July and they were having a huge 4th of July weekend bash all over the strip. If you want to keep score at home, this is how our gambling turned out: Max +$9, Brian +$1, Keith -$1, Dexter -$30, Pat –$200. Pat, licking his wounds, made us all stoop to his level and get ridiculously large pina coladas that gave us all massive headaches before the show. The show was an acoustic affair at “The House of Mosh.” All the kids were super nice and the show was very fun. Adam, who lived at the house played with his band Watermelon and covered Killer Tofu by The Beets and Ceremony. While hopping a fence to get to a pool, one of the guys at the house slipped and was impaled rectally by the top of the fence and started bleeding a lot, hopefully he feels better.

After we left Warped Tour in Dallas we went to Austin to hang out with our friend Katie since we had the day off. We passed a building called “The Heart of the Texas Educational System” that was closed down. We hung out on 6th street and listened to live blues during happy hour, then saw a place called Death Metal Pizza that serves you pizza in a cloud of darkness and fog.

The next day we played The Pinebox, a cool venue in the middle of Texas in a town naturally called Midland whose proud claim to fame is “The Home of George W Bush.” We played with Run For Cover and Dreaming who were awesome. We had to stay in a motel since the south proved it was too hot to sleep in the van at Hotel Walmart. Because of people telling us we’d get stopped by boarder patrol since we have a van, we sadly had to flush some weed and Max left our bowl in the motel room’s bible. Of course, we ended up never getting stopped.

We played El Paso at a house called the Naylair. Clarity was on the bill too and we watched Detroit Rock City. It was maybe the hottest house we ever played but the show ruled and everyone was super nice. The house was even too hot to sleep in so we ended up making our way to Phoenix. Leaving El Paso you’re REALLY close to the Mexican boarder/Juarez, none of us have ever seen as many lights as we did driving around Juarez.

Early the next day, we asked two girls in a pick up how far we were away from Phoenix and they proceeded to pick up a dude, follow us on a highway, and speed up to us just to pass us giving the finger. We were also delighted to find out that Phoenix was 114 degrees. We played acoustic because it was last minute show with Blacklist Royals. There was one another acoustic act so it was only mildly awkward. We decided that night to bust it to San Diego. We stopped to be hippies and look at the millions of super bright stars as far as you can see, it made me think of a 2002 emo song name: The Stars Are Never Brighter Than In Arizona. We went to Coachella Valley as the sun was coming up and felt very victorious. On the way up highway 101, Social Distortion’s Highway 101 came on shuffle which was amazing. We played “The White House” in Bonsell, CA. The venue was a house beng converted into a venue with an amazing view minus the noose in the neighbor’s yard. Matt from Animal Style, who released our s/t on vinyl, came out and was a little scared. We stayed at his place in Anaheim, it was awesome seeing so many records everywhere.

Washington Square Park are currently out on tour, and it got off to a rough start, but we couldn’t be more happy to have them featured with a brand new Road Blog. Make sure to read all of the band’s stories below from Brian Legentiil!

No one in Washington Square Park have ever been on a tour with such an inauspicious start. In the span of an hour on the first day a truck driver parked his truck in front of Max’s driveway when we were trying to leave and wouldn’t move it, we found out Late Nite Wars, the band we were doing this whole full US tour with dropped off, the first two shows were cancelled and the rain was completely out of control while going down the garden state parkway. Luckily, the crew we have are extremely positive people and that’s the most important thing for a touring band that makes no money. We’ve pretty much dubbed this tour the Walking Bar Joke Tour: We have a punk (Me, Brian, Bass), a Jew (Max, singer/guitarist), a Ginger (Keith, guitar/vocals), a black guy (Dexter, drums) and a Guinny (Pat, merch dude, resident Italian). The stares have been plentiful.

After getting cheese steaks in Philly where our first show was supposed to be, we decided for the first night to go to campgrounds in North East Maryland (that was actually the town name). Keith set up a great tent he brought but after getting eaten alive for a few hours we ended up sleeping in the van anyway, and our night was capped off by five minutes straight of a female’s blood curdling screams.

A pipe broke in the basement of the kid’s house we were supposed to play at in Virigina, but we were able to get a last minute show in Murfreesboro, North Carolina at Zakk’s Coffee House. There’s a reason way you’ve never heard of that town, I’m pretty sure the only thing there was churches and cops. Cindy, the woman who ran it was nice as hell and fed us. I noticed not one but two bands on the greatest video game sound track of all time, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1, played there: The Ernies and Speedealer. It was Dexter’s first show with us after our drummer Mike fucked himself up pretty bad in a motorcycle accident (get better!) but he sounded really great, we’re really stoked he pretty much dropped everything for us!
